The 2022 Sonder is an excellent example of Grenache Blanc, which is rarely seen as a standalone grape outside of blends. Aromas of apple, stone, and tropical fruits waft out of the glass, leading into complex flavors of Asian Pear, mango, and cumin. Spicy hints of fenugreek are accompanied by a refreshing, slightly bitter taste of almond that balances the wine’s natural creaminess. Medium alcohol levels and lees aging give it a dash of creamy complexity, which is further balanced by lemon zest on the long finish.
Winemaker Riley Miller worked at revolutionary wineries when he first graduated from university, but it was his time at Somos that truly showed him his path. Somos is a minimal-intervention natural wine producer in Australia, a country that’s increasingly prestigious among wine connoisseurs for its off-the-wall, terroir-driven bottlings. Shortly after Riley’s adventures in the Land Down Under, he settled in Washington State’s Columbia Valley. He founded Sonder in 2016 with the purpose of making light, lo-fi wines that showcase the state’s best grapes and how they fare in varying weather conditions against the dry valley landscape. He primarily vinifies Rhone varieties like Grenache Blanc and Mourvedre, which thrive in that climate.
